Dundee Internet Services, Inc., to Upgrade Internet Access Site in Dundee

Support for New K56flex™ Modems Featured

August 23, 1997 Azalia, Michigan -- Dundee Internet Services, Inc today announced ...

Dundee Internet Services, Inc., is pleased to announce the imminent opening of a new, all-digital, Internet access site in the Dundee area. Rick Rountree, Dundee Internet Services' VP of Network Operations, said, "We are enthusiastically supporting the Rockwell/Lucent K56flex™ technology for high speed modem access. GTE has already installed the new digital telephone lines needed and all we are waiting for is the for terminal server equipment and digital modems to arrive. We hope to have the new facilities operational by Labor Day."

Dundee Internet Services is installing an all digital modem pool that they will strive to maintain at an 8:1 user to modem ratio or better. "We had to replace all of our incoming analog telephone lines with new state of the art digital lines in order to accommodate the new modems.", Rountree said. "These new modems are replacing older analog equipment and we believe all customers will see faster and more reliable connections even with their current modems."

The big gain for area Internet users is the big leap in connection and download speeds. K56flex™ is the interoperable modem protocol co-authored by Lucent and Rockwell that enables high speed Internet downloads over standard telephone lines. Bridging the gap between current analog transmission rates and fully digital communication -- such as Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) -- this new technology offers substantially faster speeds without requiring the added investment of installing digital ISDN lines.

This means that graphics-heavy web pages, sound, and video files -- the data that usually makes you wait -- will now race to your computer at greater speeds than you currently experience with your V.34 connections. As long as your K56flex™ modem is connected to Dundee Internet Services over their digital connection to the network and your connection to the Internet meets certain conditions, you can experience the increase in speed.

The K56flex™ modem technology pioneered jointly by Lucent Technologies Inc (formerly Bell Labs) and Rockwell International Corp takes advantage of having direct access to the digital telephone network at one end of a connection. Traditional modems assume that both ends of a modem conversation have an analog connection to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Data signals are converted from digital to analog and back again, and this limits transmission speeds to 33.6 Kbps. But K56flex™ technology makes a different assumption: that one end of the modem conversation has a pure-digital connection to the phone network, which Dundee Internet Services already uses, and takes advantage of that high speed digital connection. By viewing the PSTN as a digital network, K56flex™ technology is able to propel data downstream from the Internet to your computer at high rates of speed, depending on the telephone line and other conditions. In this way K56flex™ technology is different than other modem technologies -- because the downstream data is digitally encoded instead of modulated. This is an asymmetrical method, so upstream transmissions (mostly keystroke and mouse commands from your computer to the central site, which require less bandwidth) continue to flow at the V.34 rate.

The completion of this upgrade to Dundee Internet Services' facilities will make them the first multiple location Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Michigan to have a 100% digital operation at all access locations. In addition to the Dundee site, Dundee Internet Services also has digital ISDN and modem access points throughout Washtenaw and parts of Wayne and Livingston counties.
