Old Mill Restoration Committee
In June, 1981, The Old Mill Restoration Committee was formed. The committee of interested local citizens began to renovate the three-story structure of the Old Mill, parts of which date back to 1855. The 1890 - 1907 era--Grist Mill time--was the restoration goal of the committee. There is still evidence of grain shoots and photos are available showing the turbine power that once harnessed the natural elements of water to turn raw materials into useable form.

The committee began by completely stripping and refinishing all the interior walls. The ceiling was cleaned and miscellaneous sprinkler-system pipes, etc. were painted. Many years of tar, grease, and dirt were sandblasted from the main floor and hundreds of unwanted nails were removed by hand.

A dummy wall was built to camouflage electrical units including adequate space to install necessary heating at a later time. The group then dismantled an old storage shed from the park area. The wide nine-inch weathered boards were used to cover these new dry wall areas.

In the summer of 1982, the group removed floor boards from an old barn (donated by a local farmer). It was the hope of the group to use these boards in repairing the mill floor. A carpenter was hired to replace deteriorated boards. However, once he began the job it was found that many of the support beams also needed to be replaced, the south wall foundation replaced, and most of the floor could not be saved. The committee abandoned the idea of restoring the original floor. Once the structural work was completed by contractors, a completely new floor was installed over the old floor. It took approximately 400 volunteer man-hours to lay the new treated pine 3" tongue-n-grooved floor. Many hours of sanding, staining, and hand-rubbed finishing followed to give the floor a satin glow it once had from the gentle abrasion of flour and feed.

During the winter of 1984, antique lighting fixtures were hung on the three center pillars to appear as the old gas-light fixtures of years ago, however, electrified for today's needs. With the financial help of the village, a new heating system was installed in 1986. During that same year, work began to organize memorabilia and artifacts from the Dundee area into a second floor museum. This area officially opened October 12, 1986.

In the summer of 1988, the exterior of the Old Mill was refurbished. Powerwashing, scraping, replacement of rotten wood, caulking and reglazing windows was done followed by a coat of wood stabilizer. Then the entire structure was primed and painted white.

Over the years the committee realized becoming a working mill again was unlikely and pursued more museum history-telling ideas. Design Craftsmen was hired in 1988 to give plans and ideas for using all three floors as a display and educational museum.

At this time plans include visiting and portable museum displays on the first floor, and development of the third floor for both storage and additional museum displays. Some of the monies ($12,000) will come from a state-funded grant shared with the village.
